2024 eyeWitness Outcome Report–Justice Captured: Authentic Evidence in a Digital Age

The eyeWitness to Atrocities 2024 outcome report is out! As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of eyeWitness to Atrocities, we reflect on a decade of supporting documenters working in some of the world’s most dangerous environments.

In 2024, human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society organisations continued to document atrocity crimes using the eyeWitness to Atrocities app, capturing a total of 13,641 photos, videos and audio recordings. Submissions came from across the globe, including Ukraine, Palestine and Nigeria.

Legal proceedings in Ukraine relied on footage captured with the eyeWitness app, demonstrating the app’s value in providing authentic, tamper-proof footage that meets the standards to be used in court.

Footage captured also contributed to 13 dossiers prepared by eyeWitness and submitted to a range of accountability mechanisms, including the ICC and Europol. Submissions to UN Special Rapporteurs included both footage and analysis to support their mandates.

eyeWitness also made a submission in 2023 ahead of the Universal Periodic Review of Nigeria, which took place in January 2024. The submission provided authenticated footage and analysis to inform the review and shed light on violations needing urgent attention.

Throughout the year, eyeWitness expanded its global support by delivering training to new documenters and entering into new partnerships with human rights organisations in high-risk regions. This work reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening local capacity for secure, credible documentation.
